The Plunge

8:11 AM Posted In Edit This 0 Comments »

Well, after much debate Phil and I decided to take the plunge and switch to cloth diapers.  If you would have asked me a few years ago if I would have breastfed, made my own baby food and used cloth diapers I would have laughed at you.  I had little to no interest in breastfeeding, no interest in making baby food and definitely no interest in cloth diapers.  Well, obviously my tune has changed.  There are obvious benefits to breastfeeding and making your own baby food – good for baby and not to mention the savings!  Cloth diapers were a little harder to get on board with.  When I was pregnant I was all for disposables and even after I had Remy I was all for them.  We had a diaper kegger when I was pregnant and received a ton of disposables from our awesome friends and we have just run out.  After 6 months I finally had to purchase our own disposables.  I knew diapers were expensive but I didn’t put much thought into it until I actually had to start spending my own money on it.  I hate, hate, hate spending money on something that you just shit on (literally) throw away.  Call me cheap.  So after debating for a few weeks and several conversations, Phil and I decided to try cloth diapers.  Phil got to say “I told you so” since he wanted cloth from the start.  This was a very scary decision but less so because I have a friend who uses cloth so at least I knew some about it.  After some advice from her and some others I took the plunge and bought my own.  I bought 6 used Charlie Bananas from the friend who already uses cloth, 12 Bum Genius (2 were free!), 3 Kawaii Goodnights and 3 Blueberry.  I bought a few different brands because I didn’t want to spend a ton of money on one brand and hate it.  Every baby is different so diapers fit differently.  It was a spendy investment but it will save us thousands of dollars in the end.  From all of my reading, lots of people say that they started with disposables and switched to cloth and wish they would have started with cloth because they loved it so much.  Hopefully I can be one of those people!  I’ll let you know what I think!

Vent Day!

This seriously happened to me this morning...  I pumped 9 glorious ounces and spilled half of it down my dress and on the floor.  Spilled milk is worth crying over.

I absolutely hate when I go to use the bathroom in a public place and I sit down and the toilet seat is warm.  Ugh, gross, that means someone had been sitting there for a while taking care of business.  EWWWW.  Grosses me out.

Sewing date!

On Friday I had a sewing date with my very pregnant friend, Lynsie.  She got started on some baby projects and I finished up a couple of mine.  Mine have been sitting halfway done for a few months now and I finally finished them!!  I finished a crib sheet and a changing table pad cover for Rem. Of course I had to have Rem show them off.  :)

Vent Day!

Ok, I know vent day is supposed to be on Wednesday BUT I just can't seem to remember some Wednesdays or I'm just too busy.  So, for now on, vent day will be whenever I feel like venting.  :)

Today's vent:  My life = SSDD (for those of you who don't know what that means - same shit, different day).  I feel like I have the exact same routine every single day and I never have time to really do anything. I wish there was more time in the day!!  And working 4 days a week instead of 5 wouldn't hurt either.  ;)

Just a Few Tidbits

1.   I’m crabby.  There’s a blizzard going on outside and I’m sick and tired of driving in this shit.  Not only did I have to drive in it but when I got to work I took a major digger in the parking lot at work.  I am not typically a clumsy person but now my hip hurts.  At least no one witnessed this digger.  I felt like an idiot.

2.  I received an email at the end of last week from Netflix graciously letting me know that season 8 of Weeds was now on instant.  Yay!!!  So what did I do this weekend may you ask?  I watched the entire season.  I had to – it was the last season.  I was not exactly happy with the way then ended it BUT what can you expect from a drug dealing mother of 3?  I’m surprised a show about selling pot went on for 101 episodes.  But I’ll miss it.

3.  Weird tidbit… My hands are so dry that they feel like they are drying out from the inside out.  It's an odd feeling and I'm not fond of it.  And it’s not the outside of my hands.  It’s my fingers and palms.  They are super cracked and almost wrinkly – like I was in the bath too long.  And they hurt.  I’ve been lotioning up a million times a day and it seems to be helping with the pain but I’m starting to get worried.  Hopefully they don’t get worse.  I’m sure it’s from washing my pump 7 times a day.  Dish soap must be harsh on your skin!

 4.  I weighed myself this morning and I am only 1 pound away from my pre-pregnancy weight!  1 pound!  Whoot whoot!!!!!  I know I’ve said this before but breastfeeding is the BEST weight loss program there is!

A Few of My Favorite Baby Items!

When you're becoming a parent for the very first time you have absolutely no idea what items are necessary and what are not.  Every baby is different but here's a few of my favorite things:

This swing was AWESOME!  Remy absolutely loved it.  It's nothing fancy.  Just swings back and forth.  I could put him in this when he was tiny and he would sleep for hours in it.

Swaddle Me swaddle from Target.  These come in a 2 pack and were necessary with my little one.  For the longest time this was the only way to get him to nap.  He's 5 1/2 months old and we just took the swaddle away this weekend because he started rolling over.  I would suggest these for babies who need to be swaddled.  Much easier than using a blanket!
We use this crib soother every single day.  Remy likes to listen to it when he goes to bed and if I need to distract him when he's fussy I can put him in his crib and turn it on with the lights and he's in awe.  Couldn't live without this one!
Lotion is a must for most babies and I found that Aveeno Baby is the best!  We used the regular Johnson's baby lotion and it didn't help much.  Remy had such dry skin with it being the winter and all and had some super dry spots and his pediatrician recommended Aveeno Baby.  I LOVE it!  His chubby little legs and arms are no longer dry.  They are so soft and it smells good  :)
The bumbo chair!  Definitely a must have.  Remy loves to sit so he can see what's going on.  Definitely worth spending the money on.  I regret not buying the one I found at a garage sale!  Who cares if it was purple!

The Baby ESP app for your android phone.  BEST invention ever!  When you take your little one home you have to remember the last time he ate, slept, changed his diaper, etc.  This app saved my life in the first few months.  You can also record his growth charts and keep other baby related data.

Resolve Stain Remover.  This is a must.  Babies have blowouts.

Not just any onsies but Carter onsies.  Remy is like a string bean - long and lean.  The Carter brand onsies are great for babies who have long torsos and are lean.  I'm sure they'd stretch just fine if your baby is a chubalub but the length is the key!  There's no buying onsies that look short and fat for Remy!
